It is impossible to remain indifferent to this place

I extracted this text from the Portugal Notável portal and because I am in complete agreement with the feelings expressed in it, I decided to transcribe it in full. After all, Imagens da Lusitânia is about images, more than texts.

“There are beautiful places in Portugal and completely detached from tourist routes, they are lost somewhere in the mist of time and have fallen by the wayside. This is the case of this grandiloquent scenario of Bogalhal Velho.
An example is the abandoned medieval village of Santa Maria de Porto de Vide, commonly known as Bogalhal Velho. It is a solemn site of immense scenic beauty.

Upon arriving, we come across the poetic ruins of a village, which had some medieval importance, surrounded by scrub, with only the gothic skeleton of the church (typical of medieval temples in the region), traces of houses and walls.

The town must have been abandoned at the end of the Middle Ages, similarly to what happened with the neighboring village of Castelo de Monforte (Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo); and it may have been a strategic point in the defense of the Kingdom before Alcanices. In historical times, the zone of the beirã streak, due to its periphery, its extreme climate and the disagreements with the neighboring kingdom, has always been repulsive to human occupation during our nationality.

However, the beauty of the place and the existence of a church, made it possible for the site to continue to be frequented by annual processions for some time – which are always the last rattle of a dying village. Then even those ceased and the place was forgotten, until Pinhel’s mayor, in good time, and already in the 21st century, made its accessibility possible.

The village is based on a granite hill, with a height of 500 m, and could have been a fortified crust. Its eastern limit is an impassable granite escarpment, excavated by Ribeira das Cabras, in the remaining perimeter, it would probably be surrounded by a wall.

The Cabras Stream and the Côa River in Bogalhal Velho

It is remarkable the embedded valley of Ribeira das Cabras, which has its mouth here on the Côa River. The height difference reaches a dizzying 110 m.
To the north strolls the magical Côa river, housed at the foot of the Serra da Marofa, prepared to break through the strong quartzitic wall and later break through the river canyon in Cidadelhe (this village is one of the most beautiful places in all of Beira Interior). The mountain, which is the compass of the region, appears in all its splendor, from Santo Antão to the top of Marofa.
